چکیده

Beams are high-aspect-ratio structural members that are used extensively in civil, automotive, aerospace, and MEMS applications. In all such applications, one must typically analyze and optimize the beams through computer simulations. Standard 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) of beams can be used in such simulations; it is however prone to errors, and is computationally expensive for thin structures. Therefore, a common strategy is to carry out a dimensionally reduced 1-D beam analysis. Unfortunately, 1-D beam analysis is hard to automate and integrate with 3-D CAD. In this paper, we propose an alternate “algebraic reduction” method that combines the generality of 3-D FEA, and the computational efficiency of 1-D beam analysis. This is achieved via a dual-representation framework where the geometry of the beam is captured via a 3-D finite element mesh, while the physics is captured via a 1-D beam model. The proposed method is formally established, and supported through numerical experiments.

Numerical free vibration analysis of higher-order shear deformable beams resting on two-parameter elastic foundation

Free vibration analysis of higher-order shear deformation beam resting on one- and two-parameter elasticfoundation is studied using differential transform method (DTM) as a part of a calculation procedure. First, the governing differential equations of beam are derived in a general form considering the shear-freeboundary conditions (zero shear stress conditions at the top and bottom of a beam). ...

Projection-based approaches for model reduction of weakly nonlinear, time-varying systems

The problem of automated macromodel generation is interesting from the viewpoint of system-level design because if small, accurate reduced-order models of system component blocks can be extracted, then much larger portions of a design, or more complicated systems, can be simulated or verified than if the analysis were to have to proceed at a detailed level. The prospect of generating the reduce...

Numerical Analysis of Composite Beams under Impact by a Rigid Particle

Analysis of a laminated composite beam under impact by a rigid particle is investigated. The importance of this project is to simulate the impact of objects on small scale aerial structures. The stresses are considered uni- axial bending with no torsion loading. The first order shear deformation theory is used to simulate the beam. After obtaining kinematic and potential energy for a laminated ...

The Effect of Spandrel Beam's Specification on Response Modification Factor of Concrete Coupled Shear Walls

Response modification factor (R factor) is one of the seismic design parameters to be considered in evaluating the performance of buildings during strong motions. This paper has tried to evaluate the response modification factor of concrete coupled shear wall structures with various length/depth ratios of spandrel beams. The effect of diagonal reinforcement of spandrel beam was also evaluated o...
